Personal
Associate Professor Sucharit Koontanakulvong was born and grew up in Bangkok, Thailand. During high school at Assumption College, a 137-year old public high school, he joined in the sport festival event as a color leader and also joined the school’s science club for TV competition camping.
Associate Professor Sucharit Koontanakulvong entered the Kyoto University after one year Japanese language study under Mombusho Scholarship scheme and studied in the field of Chemical Engineering in bachelor level where he studied fluid mechanics, system engineering. He changed to the field of Water Use Engineering under the field of Agricultural Civil Engineering (Nogyodoboku) in his Master and Doctor program also at Kyoto University. Under Professor supervision, he did the research on FEM 2D simulation modeling and also learned the project planning and operation of irrigation projects by travelling to visit many irrigation projects in Japan during the graduate study and helped in the teaching and research works (Toban Irrigation Project, Nakaumi Reclaimation Project etc.) during the post graduate period.
After Doctor degree graduation in 1983, he joined in the Civil Engineering Department (moved to Water Resources Engineering later), Chulalongkorn University and joined in the research of rural water resources development, Flood and Drought study, climate change impact and adaptation in water sector, groundwater modelling, national water resources planning, community water development etc.
Assoc Prof. Sucharit Koontanakulvong’s research now focuses on water resources planning on the aspects of water security, water resilient, water productivity and water governance. The recent research trend is the research introducing weather projections and new technologies (sensor/iot, ai) to improve dam water planning and operation.
